Blog: Shrewsbury Town at the top of the league
Monday 6th September 2010, 2:19PM BST.
In a fantastic week for Town we moved to the top of the league, were giant-killers in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and bagged £500,000, writes Shrewsbury Town blogger James Pugh.
It’s not that long ago that we were a mid-table team, boring to watch and had no prospects of getting out of League Two. But in a short space of time, a new manger and new-look team has transformed the club.
We have become a team that now works its socks off, is solid at the back, creative in midfield and lethal up front.
Fans couldn’t have wished for a better start to the new campaign, with the brave exit in the Carling Cup to Stoke being the only blip.
We are full of confidence, fear no team and Saturday’s game against Rotherham – one of the favourites for promotion – showed the attributes needed to be a successful side.
We were creative and attack-minded in the first half and hard-working and willing to put bodies on the line in the second half.
Graham Turner obviously deserves a lot of the credit for our early success. His experience and man-management style are two of his greatest assets and it is evident from what the players have said in interviews that they respect him and want to play for him.
Another key factor is that the new players have settled in quickly and, from what we have seen so far, Turner will need to try and extend the loan deals of Sadler and Wright as soon as possible.
Now for a word of caution. It is very early days and would be foolish to get carried away. It might be a strange thing to say but top of the league can be a dangerous place to be because other teams put that little bit more effort in to beat you.
However, as long as the players stay fit and continue to play at the level they have shown so far, there is no reason why we can’t remain at the top and get promoted at the end of the season.
There was more good news for Town last week as Joe Hart made his first competitive appearance for England, meaning we have bagged £500,000.
That sort of money at this level is fantastic and can be used to settle any debts the club has and invest in new players. Just because we are top doesn’t mean we can rest on our laurels and not keep improving the squad.
What do fans think we should spend the money on?
Next up for Town in the league is an away trip to Gillingham, who have surprised a few so far this season with their poor start.
Town will be looking to keep their 100 per cent away record in the league and gain a little revenge for 2009’s play-off final defeat.
