Opening win should have Shrewsbury Town fans excited
Monday 9th August 2010, 7:00AM BST.
Blog: An opening day win over the League Two favourites should have fans very excited about the new season, writes Shrewsbury Town blogger James Pugh.
It didn’t take long for former Town legend Graham Turner to make his mark on the team as we brushed aside Bradford 3-1 on Saturday.
These are early days and we shouldn’t get carried away, but there were so many positives to take from the game to get us optimistic about the season ahead.
The highlights for me were the performances of the two wide men, Ainsworth and Wright, and the link-up play between Harrold and hat-trick hero Robinson.
Robinson is an interesting case following a disastrous campaign last season where he couldn’t establish himself in the side and questions were being asked of his attitude.
But fair play to the lad as he seems to have his got his head down in training, has looked sharp in pre-season and took his goals well on Saturday. Could this be down to the influence of Turner, I wonder?
The victory was even more impressive considering we had a host of new faces being on show and the fact that we are playing a different style of football under Turner.
The new style of getting the ball down and using the wings should be enjoyed by fans this season, even if we don’t always get the results. One word of caution though, Mr Turner – if it isn’t working in games, have we got a plan b?
Which of the new players stood out for fans on Saturday?
Next up for Town is a tasty Carling Cup tie against Charlton at the Greenhous Meadow tomorrow. Charlton are regarded as one of League One’s biggest teams and it isn’t that long ago since they were playing in the Premier League.
Promotion is the number one priority this season, but a decent run in the cups would be good for the fans and provide the players with confidence in the league.
But will Turner take the cups seriously, and do fans think he should?
After a good start in the league Town need to keep the momentum going on Saturday as they travel to Macclesfield.
It is not the easiest place to go and Macclesfield picked up a decent point away to Stevenage in their first game, but I think Town will prove to be too strong.

Lets not get too excited over this first match, although a great result and the right start the players need to show over each month that the attitude is right for every game.
Last season we were singing the praises of players and manager one match then the next it was all doom and gloom.
I’m a huge Turner fan, have been since his early days at the Gay Meadow and what Turner always seem to get from his players were great performances from sometimes the most mediocre players. Brian Clough was also such a manager. Lets see if the lift he seems to have brought back in his return can produce great play from everyday players and not just the better ones. We’ll need the whole of the squad to play well to get promotion…..but what a brilliant start, well done Robinson, you gave everything and deserved the goals.
