Rebuilding has to start at Shrewsbury Town
Monday 10th May 2010, 9:51AM BST.
Town’s poor season is finally over and now the hard work begins on building for a promotion push in next year’s campaign, writes Shrewsbury Town blogger James Pugh.
What a rollercoaster of a season Town have had – promotion hopes at the start of it, a mid season blip followed by a mid-table and managerless finish.
Overall the standard of football has been boring and poor and the players have failed to deliver on a consistent basis.
So where has it all gone wrong? Lack of quality signings, losing Grant Holt and Ben Davies in pre-season, poor management, too many home defeats and not beating poor teams such as Darlington.
At least we ended the season with an encouraging performance against Port Vale and ruining any chance they had of getting into the play-offs.
It was good for young players such as Tom Bradshaw again show why teams like West Ham are thought to be tracking him – if you are to believe the national papers!
Player of the season for me would have to be Dave Buton, Dean Holden or Dave Hibbert, while biggest disappointment has got to be Jake Robinson.
Here is how I think Town’s players have faired:
Chris Neal – Frustrating season after picking up niggling injuries.
Dave Button – Outstanding talent and will make it big in the game.
Dean Holden – One of our most consistent performers.
Graham Coughlan – Solid although age is catching up with him.
Kelvin Langmead – Not as good as last year, but still one of our better players.
Shane Cansdell-Sherriff – Mixed season, but ability to play in different positions proved pivotal.
Joe Skarz – Talented youngster and will only get better.
Steven Leslie – Moments of magic, but still inconsistent.
Terry Dunfield – Showed signs of ability, but doubts still remain whether he is good enough.
Craig Disley – Good player but we didn’t see him on the field enough due to injury.
Paul Murray – Old legs but still one of our better players when he was on the pitch.
Kevin McIntyre – Not a player that will take the club forward.
Benjamin Van Den Broek – Seen enough to think he could become a good player.
Lewis Neal – Lots of ability but needs to be more consistent.
Jake Simpson – Could become decent player, but time at the club might have come to an end like his dad.
Dave Hibbert – Frightening to think where we would have ended up without his goals.
Jake Robinson – One of the season’s biggest disappointments.
Kris Bright – Poor signing and will need to improve a lot if he is to receive support of fans.
Jamie Cureton – Big name, but didn’t have passion to play for us.
Nathan Elder – Another poor Simpson signing who belongs in non-league football.
Tom Bradshaw – Early signs are good but will he go the way of Jamie Tolley or Joe Hart?
Town’s board now need to act sharpish and get a new manager in as soon as possible who can then go about their business of clearing the club’s ‘dead wood’ and freshening up the squad.
Over the last couple of weeks we have heard numerous names been mentioned for the vacant manager’s job. For me a return of Gary Peters and the possibility of Dean Windass are definite no-goes.
Dave Hughes knows the club well although I doubt he has got good enough contacts in the game. Steve Cotterill is a great shout but will he leave Notts County? Watch this space!
I have got to ask fans what they think about the choices of names for Town’s ground next season.
Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate Greenhouse for sponsoring the club and for their money, but do we really have to choose between calling our home Greenhouse Stadium, Park, Coliseum, Arena or Meadow.
If I had to choose one it would of course by Greenhouse Meadow, but I fear next season we are going to become an easy target for chants sung by away fans and who can blame them!

Fair comments except one – Dont know which Dean Holden you’ve been watching James. I think his constant wondering out of position and leaving us short of the back, his poor passing, his poor crossing and his lack of communication with others has been nothing more than a liability for us this season.
Compare that to our 2 released right backs from last summer. Both playing for teams who have made the playoffs I believe??

Don’t agree with the Kris Bright comment
Give the guy a chance and let him show us what he can do just like on Saturday at Port Vale. Let him play a full game not just 10 minutes here and there to proove his worth!!
As for Lewis Neal, can the guy get into a tackle????? Very low rating from me!
