Rallying call to save Royal British Legion clubs
- Today's leader
Back home. At last.
Monday 26th April 2010, 8:19AM BST.
And so finally we have arrived home, writes Jon Simcock after being stranded in Portugal.
After a week of hanging around wondering whether or not we would ever see our house again, we finally left Faro airport on the Algarve on Saturday morning.
Three hours later we touched down in Birmingham and were back in Shropshire by the afternoon.
Already, of course, the recriminations have started about the ban which grounded flights across Europe. And, as ever, most of the debate now is informed more by hindsight than by any sensible analysis of the key issues.
But, for us, the main point is that we are now back home and able to resume normal life.
In truth, it has not come a moment too soon. The last few days have been some of the most stressful of our lives and have caused all of us a huge amount of anxiety.
But the last week has also brought some brighter moments.
The help we have had from our travel company, James Villas, has been fantastic and has gone a long way to making the experience as painless as possible.
Friends, family and colleagues have all rallied around and proved an immense source of help and reassurance, raising our spirits when needed, but also offering practical ideas to help us out.
And the goodwill of fellow travellers also stranded has also been a real bonus throughout the experience.
For now though it’s back to work this morning.
And that is something I don’t think either Sharon or I will take for granted again for a good long while.
