LETTER: Our supermarkets claim to offer great prices to help us in this difficult financial climate. Actually, they are getting greedier by the minute. Some food prices are getting ridiculous.

For instance, Sainsbury’s in Telford takes great pleasure in advertising that its new potatoes are grown by a farmer in Newport and deli- vered straight to the store. There is even a large photograph of him on display.
So, how can they warrant charging £2.99 a kilo for them? Yes I have got it right, £2.99 a kilo.
In Much Wenlock, the mini-market sells new potatoes at 59 per lb – half the price of Sainsbury’s – so how come the supermarkets, with their buying power, are unable to do the same?
I would be interested to know how much the farmer at Newport was paid for his spuds – I would not be surprised if it was only pence per kilo.
It is the same with most food and veg. For instance, who in their right mind pays £12.99 a kilo for cherries (Sainsbury’s), when the little shops manage to sell them at £2.99 a lb.
No wonder our food bills are so high. I and a fellow shopper in Sainsbury’s weighed our humble spuds, looked at the price and put them back. If everybody did the same, supermarkets might have to look again at their pricing.
When supermarkets star- ted putting little shops out of business we were told food would be cheaper as they could buy in bulk. Now they have got rid of the small competitor they think they can charge what they like.
It is time we started fighting back by refusing to buy at inflated prices.
