The revamped Severn Cellars, Shrewsbury.
A Shropshire nightclub which has undergone a £500,000 refurbishment is bidding to put the county back on the map by attracting big names to the area.
Bosses at The Severn Warehouse and Severn Cellars in Howard Street, Shrewsbury, say they hope to continue attracting big names to the town, following successful appearances from Radio 1 DJ Judge Jules and chart-topping musician Calvin Harris.
Gareth Lewis, event manager at the Severn Cellars said it was an exciting time to be in Shrewsbury. He said: “The whole place has been refurbished and it looks absolutely fantastic, it looks like a big club in a big city.
“Mood lighting has made it really feel welcoming and relaxing – that is the mood we wanted to promote – a nice place for people to come because they don’t want to go somewhere which is dark and grotty anymore.”
Formerly known as The Buttermarket, the Severn Cellars and Warehouse, which boasts a capacity of 1,450, now has a new dance floor, stage, PA systems, bar, cloakroom and toilets facilities.
Drum and bass band Pendulum is set to perform at the venue in the new year, starting a year of big names coming to the venue, Mr Lewis said.
Mr Lewis said the building was also now ready to host community events during the day. He said: “It is such a massive place that goes to waste in the day so we are encouraging any groups to get in touch and they can use the building.”

This was promised 3 years ago by Kerry Wycherly. We got the Cheeky Girls and a string of nameless numpties. Lets have some real music, name bands, not ‘Calvin Harris’ and yet more music for people struggling with puberty and their own narrow lack of taste.

Shouldn’t the new theatre severn be attracting Name Bands – Shrewsbury has no music sceme whatsoever, whereas Crewe, Macclesfield, Stratford are similar size communities and have good bands on EVERY NIGHT OF THE£ WEEK!!! Why is the Shrewsbury music sceme so pathetic??

I agree with flydd the kidd – I asked the programme manager at Theatre Severn about this and he said they didn’t think the venue was suitable. What gets me is that if you’re not a kid or a pensioner there is precious little to get excited about at TS – some live CONTEMPORARY music would be excellent!

(flydd the kidd) has hit the nail on the head. There is nowhere for bands to play. You NEED !!! a steady stream of local acts to boost any music scene. Unfortunatly the council have it in for anyone that makes the slightest noise after dark. No wonder all the local bands move away !!
(RF) The theatre would be an awesome venue. The small theatre (walker theatre) is perfect. Ive seen a band in there and it was amazing. The theatre are just as Anti youth/band/working class as the council. Hang on… they are the council…. !!

shropshire has always had a poor record with live venues, oakengates theater and now theater severn continue the trend, its down to the people running them basically, acts love playing new venues, as this opens new markets for them for people who would not travel to major cities to watch them.

to be fair, the twang/sunshine underground gig was pulled as the promoter changed the lineup at the last minute (dropped the twang from the bill) and had sold less then 50 tickets. it was nothing to do with the venue, they lost out on a potential fortune not being open nye.
