Wishing snow had stopped play

Shrewsbury Town logoIf only the Rochdale groundsmen weren’t so efficient then maybe Town fans wouldn’t have had to suffer their team’s 4-0 thumping to the League Two leaders, writes Shrewsbury Town blogger James Pugh.

It’s a pretty sad state of affairs when a Town fan like myself is wishing the match against Rochdale joined all of the others in the division to be postponed because of the weather at the weekend.

However, even if was called off and we were forced to play it in the future I am sure the result would have been the same, considering our recent run of form.

What the 4-0 result proved is that Town are a long way off competing against the division’s best teams and that they need to rely on Santa to bring them a change in fortune for Christmas.

What I am struggling to get my head around is how teams like Rochdale who on paper don’t look miles ahead of Town and whose fan base doesn’t even compare, are flying at the top of the league and managed to beat us so convincingly.

It’s not fair to criticise younger inexperienced players like Fairhurst, Button and Devitt for our recent slump in form.

It is the experienced heads of the rest of the team that are letting the fans down and proving one thing – they are not good enough!

If Simpson does buy in January he has got to decide between youth or experience and if he opts for experience may I suggest going for players who still have the passion to put on a shirt and go out onto the pitch and give it their all every week.

It is always said in the media at this time of year that Christmas is a crucial period in any team’s season and this year is no different with Town desperately needing a few wins to chase the promotion positions.

Forget easy fixtures as Town have proved they can struggle against any team in the division and will find the home match against Macclesfield and away trips to Bradford and Chesterfield very difficult as they look to improve their form.

I would suggest fans think about adding to the bottom of their list to Santa three points for Town on Boxing Day – and that’s only for starters!

For Christmas we will need a parachute. We are about to go into freefall. How can Simpson justify his signings to date? They are either “has-beens” or “never will be’s”. If he does make signings in January, who has confidence that he won’t invest in rubbish again. A good manager signs good players and develops them further. There is no evidence of that at all in Simpson’s reign to date.

If RW thinks he has seen enough then he must pay Simmo’ off now. There is no point letting it continue as the January transfer window could be used by a new man to try and strengthen the squad. OR, we stick with Simmo’ and save money on not having to pay off his contract. Damned if you do and damned if you don’t !!

What a patronising piece of pap that is! Facts are, the Rochdale side plays as a team, is brilliantly managed/coached and is financially managed within its means. Also, unlike your Salopian selves, we fortunately do not have a mendacious manager who, if Shrews win it’s down to him but, when they lose, the players have let him down. Therein lie (every pun intended) the essential differences.
Also, where was your massive fan base on Saturday?
