Letter: Our country is in dire straits financially. To help balance the books and avoid the country’s humiliation and reduction in international standing, and cuts in public services such as the NHS, the Government should bite the bullet and levy another 3p a litre tax on fuel and 2p on every glass, 3p on every bottle, of alcohol sold, 5p on cans.
An extra £5 tax should be levied by the Government on passengers for every aircraft flight, into and out of the country, VAT should be on all goods to the rate of 18 per cent.
Every mobile phone call and text message should be taxed at 1p. Millions of calls and texts are sent every day, so this should generate serious money for the Government. Every train journey and bus journey should be taxed at 3p.
No ifs, buts and never mind the public grumbles. It has to be done and the bitter pill taken. But if the same well-to-do bankers who caused the crash make big, fat profits, their bonuses should be taxed at 60 per cent.
That would bring a significant amount into the coffers, and we might then be able to rebuild the economy.

Instead of taking more money off us tax payers all of the time by increasing tax on this and putting prices of goods that we use everyday up why doesn’t the government stop given it away all the time. If they did more checks on people on benefit to make sure that they are genuine,stop giving it to any tom, dick and harry that turns up at our borders and stops giving our NHS money to foreigners who turn up expecting operations that they would have to pay for in their own country, then perhaps we’d get ourselves back to where we should be economically.

Problem with increasing tax on road fuel is that the increase would immediately be passed on to the cost of food thus increasing the burden on those least able to withstand it.
There is one simple answer and that is to increase National Insurance Contributions on the wealthy; at the moment NIC [ 11% ] is paid only on earnings up to £844 per week, if this limit were removed there would probably be enough left over to reduce the overall rate to 10% or even less thus also helping the lower paid.

I suggest we levy a higher tax on all those who voted in this shambles of a government and also the no smoking fascists who are responsible for all the pubs closing down and make beer free for all smokers..

The writer of this letter should look at why this country is in a state anyway.
If the current government did not have the policy of trying to stay in power by increasing public spending, by borrowing money to try and bribe the british public to thinking they had never had it so good, then we would not be in this mess.
Sensible spending and economics from the beginning would have pervented this. But Blair and Co promised the world even though he knew the country could not afford it.
But never mind let the writer of this lette tax us out of existence, even though we are already one of the most heavily taxed nations on the planet.
Just one more comment, the current climate change talks in Copenhagen will be just a License for governments around the world to print money.

The simplest option to pay off the bankers debt is simply to take the profits of the banks we now own for as long as it takes to pay it back. A further increase in tax for the wealthiest in the country would be a morally correct thing to do. It’s clear that whilst the rest of use get less well off, they continue to get ever-richer, so the balance needs to be redressed.
I’m afraid we wouldn’t save very much by saving on ‘every Tom, Dick and Harry who turns up at our borders’. The idea that illegal immigrants are given state aid is largely a tabloid myth, or rhe sort of nonsense put about by racist politicians in order to foster hatred and unrest.

Rather than raise taxes, would it not be better to LOWER ALL taxes on everything to give the consumer more money in their pockets. In the short term there would be a shortfall in funds, but with the extra cash in peoples pockets they would end up spending MORE tan what they do now, so in the long term more money would go back into the government system thus getting us out of this mess we are thrown into.
