Today: Meet the winner of the Mum of the Year award.

Debbie Williams became a foster mother two years ago.

Her child had already been with two other foster families, but they had decided they could not cope.

Through rules, listening and unconditional love, Debbie and her husband George are caring for a happy and loving 10-year-old daughter.

The couple had not fostered before and this has been a steep learning curve for them.

Erica Jones, who nominated the couple, said: “They have always persevered and have never given up on her and the results are better than anyone would have imagined.

“I have known Debbie and George for 10 years and have never failed to be amazed at the time and effort they put into the lives of other people, including me. She is the best friend anyone could ever have and I admire and love her for the way she has coped with this child.

“Although mums are always unsung heroes there is no-one who deserves this award more than Debbie and I hope you will consider her for it.”

Telford FM’s Hero Awards celebrate unsung achievements — the people who work behind the scenes making a real difference to the lives of others.

The radio station’s listeners have been nominating those volunteers and friendly characters who go the extra mile for the people around them, for no other reason than they care.

Over the weeks listeners have been nominating candidates for the Courage award, Dad of the Year award, Mum of the Year award, Volunteer of the Year award and Neighbour of the Year.

Judges have made their decisions, and Telford FM’s Paul Shuttleworth  has been making a surprise visit to the winners to present them with their certificate, trophy and a bouquet of flowers.
