A weekend influx of boisterous stag parties is frightening visitors and residents away from the centre of a Shropshire town, it has been claimed.
Pubgoers are now urging police to use existing laws to stop large groups heading to Bridgnorth – effectively banning the stag groups.
It is claimed the stags and groups of boozy revellers head for the town and its many bars and pubs from neighbouring areas like Wolverhampton and Telford, leading to incidents of alcohol-fuelled violence.
Now Philip Dunne, MP for Ludlow which covers Bridgnorth, has met local police chiefs Acting Chief Inspector James Dunn and Acting Inspector Steve Fitzpatrick to try to curb the problem.
Mr Dunne claimed the uncivilised behaviour of groups of drunken revellers was causing responsible visitors to stay away from the town’s pubs and restaurants.
He said latest statistics showed there were 394 violent attacks recorded across the former Bridgnorth District Council area last year – 185 alcohol-related.
Town pubgoers claim many of the problems are caused by the influx of stag parties or large groups of men from surrounding areas.
But Acting Chief Inspector Dunn said: “Bridgnorth is the best performing section of Shropshire division in the detection of violent crime in the year to date as a result of robust policing in the town centre.
“This involves putting officers in the right place to meet demand. We work closely with a number of partners, including the town council and CCTV operators, to ensure the safety and well-being of those enjoying Bridgnorth’s night-time economy and we will continue to deal with anyone causing problems.”
