Town seeks new recruits

paul-simpson-4Shrewsbury Town manager Paul Simpson was today continuing his search for fresh blood – after admitting his team have plenty of work to do to be ready for the big kick-off in two weeks.

Simpson’s need to bring in reinforcements was outlined on Saturday as Town – who had just 16 first team squad members fit and available – were beaten 4-0 by Championship outfit Leicester.

Numbers should be boosted by the imminent return to training of Graham Coughlan, Chris Neal, Dave Hibbert and Glyn Garner.

But Simpson is only too aware of the need to add numbers and quality to his squad following last week’s departure of striker Grant Holt.

“Maybe Saturday was a bit of a wake-up call for anyone who thinks that we are close,” said Simpson.

“We are obviously not close. It is a concern but we have got two weeks. It would be even more of a concern if it was Saturday, August 8.

“It’s fairly obvious we need bodies in the football club. We need strength in there to help us and we have got to make sure we do all we can.

“Hopefully over the next week or two we can get some people in to make us that bit stronger and give us a bit more energy.

“There are things which are on-going. It’s a bit too early to say but I’m hopeful of bringing players in and that’s all I will say at the moment.”

Leicester’s four goals were all scored in the opening period on Saturday, and Simpson admitted his team had endured a difficult afternoon.

“It was very tough but we didn’t think it was going to be an easy game,” he added.

“If you don’t do jobs right you get punished especially against good sides like Leicester.

“We had a promising start but then we switched off and allowed someone a free header from a set piece.

“In the second half we were a lot better – first half we were absolutely nowhere near where we all want to be.”
