A murder inquiry was launched after a man died following a disturbance at a Shrewsbury nightclub in the early hours of today.
The 41-year-old man was taken to hospital after he was apparently assaulted at Liquid and Diva nightclub in Raven Meadows at 12.20am but died a short time later.
Police are understood to be scouring through CCTV footage in a bid to piece together what happened.
Detectives today said four men have been arrested on suspicion of murder.
They were in custody at Shrewsbury police station awaiting questioning.
Detective Inspector Gavin Kinrade said: “Police attended the nightclub following a report of an incident which happened on the steps and in the foyer area at the entrance, shortly before 12.30am this morning.
“We are appealing for witnesses who saw what took place or the circumstances leading up to it.
“The club was busy at the time with more than 200 people in attendance. It is vital to this inquiry that anyone who saw any part of this incident should contact Shrewsbury police station on 0300 3333000 as a matter of urgency.
“Information can also be given to the Crimestoppers number, 0800 555111. The investigation is at a very early stage. It is vitally important that people who saw any part of the incident, contact the police without delay.”
David Roberts, environmental enforcement manager at Shropshire Council, said the authority – which oversees CCTV in the town – had been informed.
He said: “I can confirm police have approached the CCTV control room and are there today.”
A Home Office pathologist was expected to conduct a post-mortem examination today and John Ellery, the coroner for Mid and North Shropshire, has been informed.
Police were today continuing to make inquiries at the club which has been closed until further notice.
A police cordon was set up around two entrances to the nightclub and a police officer was guarding the building. Forensic investigators were seen entering the building this morning.
Police have not revealed what forensic officers may have found or what they were looking for.
A spokesperson for the nightclub said: “We can confirm that an incident took place at Liquid Diva in Shrewsbury, which sadly resulted in the death of a young man.
“However, no further comment can be made at this time, as this is now a police investigation and we will continue to assist them with their inquiries.”
Claire Thomas, a spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said a crew was called to the nightclub following reports of an assault on a man.
She said the patient was believed to have suffered serious facial injuries during the incident.
