Death crash road could get cameras

Tuesday 23rd June 2009, 11:40AM BST

A Shropshire road where a 25-year-old motorcyclist died in a crash is being considered as a potential site for new safety cameras, it emerged today.

Andrew William Clowes died at the scene after his motorcycle was involved in a collision with a 4×4 vehicle on the B4176 at Danford, Claverley, on Friday.

Rod Reynolds, manager of the Safer Roads Partnership for West Mercia, today said the route was being considered for new enforcement measures as part of a review with Shropshire Council and police in the county.

The partnership recently launched an initiative to encourage people to report sites where they were concerned about the dangers posed by drivers speeding.

Mr Reynolds said any new measures would have to be based on evidence gathered by monitoring traffic but the main aim was to save lives and avoid injuries.

He said: “We don’t currently enforce on that road but it is being considered. We are moving into a pilot programme of community concern sites.”

Sergeant Steven Fitzpatrick, of Bridgnorth Police Station, is investigating the crash, which happened near to The Woodman Inn pub at about 7.30pm on Friday.

He said: “I would ask anybody who saw the crash or the manner of driving by either vehicle involved immediately beforehand to please contact police as a matter of urgency.”

Mr Anthony Sibcy, coroner for South Shropshire, has been informed about the death.

A post-mortem examination was due to be carried out today and an inquest is expected to be opened later this week.

Anybody who has information about the incident is asked to call police on 0300 333 3000.

The money for speed cameras would be better spent on the “Think Bike” campaign!

Well said! I call this the ’silly season’ as there are more accidents involving motorcycles this time of the year. Unfortunately if you are on a bike and happen to collide with another vehicle you are going to come of worse, even end up dead! How effective is the “Think Bike” campaign? There will always be some who think it does not apply to them and think they can get away with anything, until they are involved in an accident.

As a biker, I’d suggest that they’d be better off running a series of safety roadshows at Quatt caff just up the road from the accident site. Mind you, that’ll cost them a few quid. Sticking a camera or two in will prove to be another money earner and doesn’t require them to actually think about the problem.
