Bucks in double signing swoop

bucks-logo2Boss Rob Smith today completed a double signing swoop to all-but finalise AFC Telford United’s summer recruitment programme.

Former Peterborough striker Matt Nolan has joined from Corby while ex-Barnsley left-back Rhys Meynell has signed from Stalybridge Celtic – both on one-year deals.

Nolan, 27, spent two years with Peterborough and also had a loan spell at Cambridge United before making his name in non-League with King’s Lynn.

He was the East Anglian club’s top scorer during their Southern League championship season in 2007-08 and then moved on to Corby, but suffered an injury – ironically playing against Telford in last season’s FA Cup.

“He was doing his rehab with Stuart Whitehead (the Bucks’ captain) at Lilleshall, and I’ve known about him for a while,” said Smith.

“We’ve been looking for a big striker who gets goals and he has got a bit of guile and class as well.

“We’ve got Danny Carey-Bertram and Andy Brown, and Phil Trainer will be our fourth striker if necessary, so we’ve got great competition.”

Left-back Meynell started out as an apprentice at hometown club Barnsley, but got his first taste of senior football during a 16-game loan spell with now-defunct Scottish Premier League side Gretna.

That experience saw him pick up a man-of-the-match award at Celtic as well as playing in front of a capacity crowd at Rangers’ Ibrox.

He joined Stalybridge last summer and made more than 40 appearances alongside Telford’s other recent recruit, winger Steve Torpey.

“He wants to get back into the pro game and sees this as a stepping stone,” said Smith.

Smith now hopes to wrap up a deal for ex-TNS midfielder Tom Field, who will be joining the club on an initial trial basis.
