Final should be knockout

Sunday 26th April 2009, 9:00AM BST

cricket-ball3The cricket season may be just a week old but the first major piece of silverware of the campaign will be handed out today.

The twice-postponed 2008 Chronicle Cup final will be contested between Shrewsbury and Newport at Madeley (12.30pm) over 20 innings of 20 overs per side.

Birmingham League premier division side Shrewsbury will be heavy favourites against a Newport side from three divisions below.

It will be the last game the two teams will play in the competition, with Birmingham League sides to be excluded in this year’s competition.

Both sides will be missing key players with Shrewsbury’s Australian overseas professional Wes Robinson not due to arrive until Thursday and Newport’s Rajat Bhatia on Indian Premier League duty.

Ed Keenan will lead Newport as regular captain Jonathan Prince is unavailable.
