Conman transferred to hospital

david-oakley1Convicted Shropshire conman David Oakley, who was arrested in France this month, has been moved to a Bordeaux prison hospital, it emerged today.

The decision follows a second brief appearance at the Court of Appeal in Poitiers, where 62-year-old Oakley was being held in custody awaiting extradition.

Oakley, formerly of Salters Lane, Shrewsbury, had complained of feeling unwell last week and was examined by hospital doctors, but was deemed fit enough to attend court.

A woman, believed to be Oakley’s wife, Amanda, also appeared before the French court for extradition proceedings linked to allegations of obtaining money by deception.

The woman, whose identity has yet to be confirmed, remains in custody in Poitiers and extradition hearings for both her and Oakley are expected to resume next week.

Both were detained on European Arrest Warrants by the French authorities in the small town of Melle in the Poitou-Charentes region on April 3.

Oakley, who has been on the run for four years, has previously claimed ill health prevented him travelling back to the UK to face trial, which was finally held in his absence.

He was convicted of a series of frauds and deceptions involving travel companies which were based at offices in the Frankwell area of Shrewsbury.

Oakley was jailed for a total of three years and nine months and is expected to be sent straight to prison to serve the sentence on his return to the UK.

His original trial had been due to start in March 2005, but, after claiming poor health he was bailed and escaped to Spain where he and his family lived in a luxury villa.
