Plans to install a zebra crossing and other safety improvements at an accident blackspot outside an Oswestry primary school were today unveiled by unitary council bosses.
Campaigners have been asking for years for better road safety outside Our Lady and St Oswald’s Catholic Primary School on Upper Brook Street.
Shropshire Council chiefs today revealed proposals to install a zebra crossing near the main school access and a plan to widen the pavement.
They say the move is aimed at improving the safety of pedestrians crossing near to parked vehicles.
In conjunction with this, the authority has proposed a priority system for vehicles is introduced, with the priority of flow given to vehicles travelling out of the town.
It is also suggested that a 20mph zone is introduced on the section of Upper Brook Street between Oswald Place and Lutton Close.
The council is now inviting people to have their say on the proposals.
John Everall, Shropshire Council’s cabinet member for environment and sustainability, said: “We hope these proposals will help to improve some of the key issues that have been communicated to us and will encourage more pupils, parents and teachers to walk to school”.
Oswestry councillor Joyce Barrow added: “As a daily user of this road, I am very aware of the issues and concerns parents, residents and drivers who use Upper Brook Street have. It is vitally important that all users of this route have some input into the consultation.
The plans can be viewed at Oswestry Library or at the Shirehall in Shrewsbury.
