Telford fail to close gap

AFC Telford UnitedThe Bucks followed up three consecutive wins with an away defeat at Workington on Saturday to continue the inconsistent form that has been holding them back since the turn of the year, writes AFC Telford blogger Joe Davies.

After good wins at Solihull Moors and Tamworth put the Bucks back in amongst the pack fighting for the title and gave fans hope that their blip since the New Year was over.

A win at Kettering in the FA Trophy between the two league wins served only to raise the expectations of the fans even higher.

However, the loss at Workington means having gained precious ground in the title race in the last few weeks, the Bucks failed to gain any more ground despite the fact that both Tamworth and Southport could only muster a draw each.

All season the forwards in the squad have been scoring goals on a regular basis and that is shown by the fact that 45 goals have been scored by Terry Fearns, Andy Brown and Danny Carey Bertram. Add to that the recent return to fitness for Matty Lewis and the reputation of new signing Mark Danks and the Bucks appear to have ‘goals’ written all over them.

Therefore, it would seem that it would be easy enough to cope without Andy Brown, wouldn’t it? Not Saturday. Carey Bertram has been scoring recently and as has already been said, Danks comes with a big reputation, but for some reason we rarely looked like scoring or troubling Workington anywhere near enough to take something from the game.

Maybe the rhythm was slightly disrupted having to re arrange the team with Gavin Cowan out, Indy Khela in and James Meredith back from suspension.

Whatever the reason for the inconsistency that is seriously hindering the promotion hopes of Telford fans and management needs to be sorted, and soon.

Games are coming thick and fast at the minute due to the freak weather conditions we have had lately and the build up of cup competitions and that can only add further to the difficulty of fighting successfully on three fronts until the end of the season.

Lee Carter and Rob Smith have voiced their concern for the fixture pile up and I can see why. Maybe if the lads up their performances on the pitch, the hierarchy won’t be so worried about the fixtures being close together. As they both pointed out, injuries could play a big part, but surely the squad should be able to cope with an injury here and there? After all, isn’t that what the squad is for?

The lads have a chance to get their league season back on track on Tuesday when they face Vauxhall Motors at the New Bucks Head and a win is vitally important at this stage of the season.
