End of era as Woolies finally shuts

Time will be called at 6pm on some of the county’s biggest branches, notably in Telford Town Centre and Shrewsbury, where shelves were already being dismantled.A high street shopping era was drawing to a close today as most of the last remaining Woolworths stores across Shropshire prepared to shut up shop for the last time.

Time will be called at 6pm on some of the county’s biggest branches, notably in Telford Town Centre and Shrewsbury, where shelves were already being dismantled.

Staff at the stores in New Street, Wellington, and Broad Street, Welshpool, were also preparing to close today and colleagues at the branch in Newtown will be doing the same on Monday.

The Shropshire casualties were among 200 Woolworths stores around the country which were closing down today, although they were originally scheduled to have shut yesterday.

Deloitte, the adminstrators acting for the company, said the 24-hour stay of execution had been granted because there was still some stock remaining and more time was needed to handle the workload.

More than half the UK stores have already shut. At least 150 of the retailer’s 807 outlets held their last day of trading on December 30.

The branches in Newport and Whitchurch closed for the last time three days before that. The collapse of the firm, which first came to the UK from America in 1909, leaves 27,000 workers facing redundancy.

Mr J what are you on about? It would have happened whoever was PM. You mu7st be a very small minded man if you believe this recession is due to Gordon Brown. Maybe you should read the news and pay attention more to the facts instead of the easy way out of blaming the PM.Some people!
