County pantomime’s big night : Shropshire Star:

The stars were shining brightly in Telford for the opening night of Oakengates theatre’s pantomime, Beauty and the Beast.

West End theatre stars had the audience in The Place literally jumping out of their seats and joining in on the fun of the classic pantomime. Beginning the show with a bang was former ‘Allo ‘Allo star Sue Hodge, who acted as both story narrator and the villain Witch Hazel.

Joining her was comedian and impressionist Paul Squire, eccentric panto dame Alistair Horne and former Hollyoaks actor Richard Calkin.

Before heading to the stage Mr Calkin, who played villain/ladies’ man Gaston, said: “I am originally from Wolverhampton so its been great to come back and work so close to home. It really is a nice show to be involved in because there is definitely something for everybody.”

Hundreds of people who attended the show last night got involved by clapping, singing and even dancing in the aisles.

Louise Rapkin, nine, of Ketley, Telford, said: “My favourite bit was when we all got to boo the witch and shout at the funny characters.”

But new performers Danielle Harvey and Oliver Thornton were the ones who seemed to steal the show with their roles as Beauty and the Beast.

Miss Harvey said before the show: “We are loving every minute of being in the show, it’s great, the people are great and most importantly Oakengates is great.”

Danielle and Oliver revealed their favourite part of the show to be the act one finale, where they joined on stage by all of the dancers for the ballroom scene.

“It seems to really touch the audience when they see we are falling in love, it is really magical,” said Danielle.

Renu Purvis, of The Rock in Telford, said: “The show was fabulous.

“Opening night’s are always fabulous because there is that excitement in the air.

“My daughter Zara is in the show as Beauty’s dog, Fluffy, and it is wonderful because I know she is up there having the time of her life.”
