Cound Hall, near Shrewsbury - 1920s

There is a connection between Cound Hall, near Shrewsbury, and one of the best known writers of romantic fiction.

On April 23, 1927, Alexander George McCorquodale, of Cound Hall, married Barbara Cartland – later Dame Barbara Cartland – at Westminster.

Miss Mary Barbara Hamilton Cartland, of Chelsea, had presumably visited Cound Hall during their courtship, and a party of 35 employees of Cound Hall and Cound estate made the journey to London to see the wedding.

The marital home was in Culross Street, just off Park Lane, London. Sadly, their marriage did not last.

Our old picture, loaned by Don Langford, seems to date from around those days. The hall has had its ups and downs over the years, being at one stage on an “at risk” register, but now seems on the up, and there is new housing in part of the grounds.

I remember the coronation in 1953………in other words H.R.H. was not yet queen and therefore, not a reigning monarch.

However, nice photo and thanks for sharing it.
