A survey by Telford MP David Wright has revealed massive public opposition to plans to build a waste incinerator at Granville tip on the eastern edge of the town.

He conducted a postal survey in Priorslee and St Georges to see what residents thought of the multi-million pound proposals.

Out of 412 responses he received, 79.1 per cent of them stated they did not want the incinerator built.

Ninety five per cent of people who replied also stated that they thought a comprehensive health impact assessment was necessary to find out about the potential impact on neighbouring areas.

Mr Wright said: “I sent out a very balanced letter to local residents asking for their views on the Granville energy-from-waste incinerator and the message from the people of Priorslee and St Georges is clear – we don’t want the incinerator here.”

Mr Wright said he was still receiving 10 to 15 returns and letters a day. He is giving people until after Christmas to send back the surveys before presenting his findings to Telford & Wrekin Council in the new year.

He said planning chiefs had given assurances they would take the responses into account during their deliberations.
