Woman’s body found in field

The body of a 50-year-old woman has been found in a field near a tiny hamlet in south Shropshire.Police say they are treating it as a case of unexplained death but added that they are not looking for anyone else in connection with it.

The discovery was made yesterday lunchtime in a field at Halford, just a mile from Craven Arms.

Residents expressed their sadness and surprise at the death, adding that Halford was generally such a quiet spot.

They said they thought the body had been found near the weir in a meadow used for grazing cattle and horses.

Some said they thought the woman may have taken her own life while others suggested she had collapsed while out walking.

Two ambulance crews attended and paramedics pronounced one person dead at the scene.

Richard Ewels, spokesman for West Mercia Police, said: “The ambulance service notified us at 12.30pm that the body of a woman, aged 50, had been found in a field at Halford, Craven Arms.

“It is being treated as an unexplained death but at this stage we are not looking for anyone else in connection with it.”

The coroner for south Shropshire Anthony Sibcy has been informed of the death.

A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out and an inquest is expected to be opened next week.
