Flooded Shrewsbury

How well do you know your Shrewsbury? See if you can identify where this is in the town.

This is one of a number of pictures loaned to Shrewsbury historian and author David Trumper by Mrs Mary Turner, of Shrewsbury, whose husband Stan, a keen local historian and photographer, died earlier this year.

It is thought to show flooding in 1928 or 1929. If you haven’t identified the location yet, David says: “That’s Mr Benger getting into the charabanc. He lived in a house there.

“This is Chester Street. On the left is one of the Morris’s shops. At the end, to the left, is Coton Hill; to the right you go under the railway bridge.

“The Gateway is on the left now. The white building is Southam’s Brewery. The cottages on the right were demolished and at the top is now the Shrewsbury Chronicle car park.”

    No wonder Southam’s beer was so thin and yucky. But, we still kept drinking it in the ‘Fishes’. perhaps that is where the Pub got its name too!

    This picture makes me cry. I was a young lad who thought it so ‘posh’ to sit, having a pint in an armchair in the George, then pop down to the Raven, round the corner.
