Tesco in turbine bid

Tesco at Wellington Retail ParkA 33ft high wind turbine could be installed at a Telford supermarket in a bid to reduce its energy costs and carbon footprint.

Tesco wants to put up the structure for 15 years at its store at Wrekin Retail Park.

It would be the first Shro- pshire Tesco store with a turbine if the bid to Telford & Wrekin Council succeeds.

Supermarket spokesman Felix Gummer said today the 6kW turbine, which would be silent, would provide the equivalent energy to power four average households for a year.

“This is part of a whole series of technology we are using to reduce our carbon footprint,” he said.

Interesting - but just how is 6Kw going to help a store whose freezers probably consume more than that each. Perhaps someone could ask Tesco about this?

What ever happened to improvements to the road structure that tesco was supposed to make when it built the second story on the Telford store?

6kW will probably be enough to power the lights, it isn’t much. But, as the famous slogan goes, “every little helps”.

Well Devil, at least its a start. Perhap a power generating incinerator is next?

Perhaps if they disconnected that clock on the roof they could save some money - how many people look up there to check the time?

What an excellent idea. Well done Tesco ! Maybe the same could be applied to businesses at The Forge Retail Park too?

Devilschair, would you rather that 6 kilowatts come from a wind turbine, or from the national grid?

    Every little helps.

I’ve just heard they’re proposing the same thing at their Ludlow store. I think it’s just a cynical gimmick aimed at promoting their Green credentials, and will oppose if, when given the chance.

Funny how the Market Drayton people claimed their proposed wind-turbines were a blight on the landscape and even harmful to health and birds! Obviously the shoppers of Telford are far more in toutch with reality.
But will the Market Drayon protestors come out of the wood work to warn their fellow Salopians of the ‘dangers’? I doubt it, just shows what a bunch of NIMBYs they are or will Tesco’s car park be covered in splattered sea-gulls?

Well done Tesco, might not same them a great deal but until everyone realises the need and acts to save energy, as people have already said, every little helps. I’ll bet that it’ll be the kids shopping with mum and dad who take most notice anyway, ask questions, and hopefully the seed will be sown. Bob - I am told Tesco have submitted 2 or 3 sets of plans to the council re road improvements and a better exit, all have been turned down by the ‘we know best’ brigade at Telford and Wrekin.

Everyone grumbles about the global warming problem and when a company like Tesco try to do a little tiny bit to help, they all grumble again. If we all took the matter more seriously instead of living for today and condemning our children to yet more problems, then we would all be happier, healthier and more fulfilled individuals. Well done Tesco! At least you are trying which is more than can be said for many other grumblers who do absolutely nothing.

I meant it’s not enough - it’s a gimmick, the outlay will render it decoration for years.

Perhaps they could take back all the packaging for starters and have incinerators to generate power and recyclers at every shop. ‘Because your worth it’?

Either way it may not matter because in a severe economic downturn and unlike local shops who weather it - they’ll close the sheds and leave town.

I have sent the article onto my Manager, we need to warm up our store these days. The last few weeks it has been Baltic and staff resorting to wearing scarves and gloves at the checkouts.

I would have thought 60Kw would have been more the mark. 6Kw seems a very low output power for a 33ft high windmill

if you are going to put up a windmill, and have the resources of Tesco, then 6Kw seems rather a wast of time…. unless of course it’s got more to do with politics than a genuine attempt to start producing “clean” electricity.

Perhaps Waterwheels across the Rivers would be more productive. Especially when they are flowing more in Winter peak usage.
They may also be less unsightly.

Lucy W, of course I’d accept the cut, knowing full well that we’ll all have to pay it all later. It won’t stop me thinking this government is a cynical bunch… quite what this has to do with the Tesco initiative, I don’t see: do you really think they’re gifting us with this windmill?

pity tesco’s cannot invent a wind assisted bus to bring their punters in. certainly a water wheel on the shrewsbury canal may not be of use yet but here is hoping

Excellent idea - every little helps as they say! Maybe all supermarkets should have them. Those saying it will not be enough are probably the same ones who throw recyclable rubbish in their black bins saying ‘what difference will my little bit make’!
