Post office services in a tiny south Shropshire village have been saved, thanks to a “people power” campaign.
A “hosted outreach facility” will be established in Lydbury North’s community-run village shop.
The standard range of post office products and services will continue to be available.
The news was greeted with delight today by Lydbury North people who had expressed outrage at plans by Post Office Ltd to close its branch in the shop.
But the company today announced an outreach service, located in the shop, would replace it. The new service will operate on Mondays and Thursdays from 9.30am to 11.30am.
Jean Ferguson-Davie, a volunteer at the community shop, said: “We are very happy. The power of the people in Lydbury North is definitely working.
“They were not going to give us anything, but now we have got our school and our post office.”
Mark Partington, Post Office Ltd’s network development manager for Shropshire and Staffordshire, said: “We have to make changes in order to put the network on a more stable footing for the future and achieve this in a way which best meets the demands and concerns of its customers.
“The hosted service that will serve Lydbury North means customers can continue to access post office services locally.”
