A disappointing battle

Shrewsbury Town FCTown responded to their exit in the FA Cup with a battling draw against Chesterfield, yet the feeling after the game was still one of disappointment after we threw away two points, writes James Pugh.

It was always going to be interesting to see how the team was to react, especially after the harsh words I am sure were said by the manager earlier in the week.

And it seemed like a positive reaction when we went two nil up in the second half, before a howler by Garner let Chesterfield right back into the game.

On the balance of play it was probably a fair result, but after going in front away from home, you have got to hold on, especially as we were defending well and looking very comfortable.

There were lots of positives to take out of the performance including Holt’s brilliant brace which capped off an excellent night’s work from the front man, and I thought Ashton playing on the left wing did a very good job considering he has been out the side for a while.

A concern at the moment is our inability to keep cleans sheets.

At the beginning of the season we looked very solid and teams did not look like breaking us down, but that is just not the case at the moment.

We certainly miss Daniels, who has been a revelation for us, and I think that Jackson could do with a rest.

Don’t get me wrong, he’s been brilliant so far this season, but whether the number of games is catching up with him I do not know, because he has made a few sloppy errors in recent games.

And I’m afraid it might be time to admit that Garner’s future lies away from the club after his howler changed the game on Friday.

It saddens me to say that because his great save kept the score at 2-2, but he has not been able to regain his confidence this season and just doesn’t provide the fans or the players with faith that he is not going to concede.

I really did think that with a better defence in front of him this season he might regain some form, but this just hasn’t happened.

Although he only appeared briefly on Friday, Jamie White, who is on loan from Southampton, looks a good player. He will add some much needed pace to the front line and has got a good touch on him. Although scoring goals hasn’t been a problem for us, I did think our strikers were too similar and we hadn’t got anybody who could get in behind the defenders.

While White came in, Symes went out and I just hope the lad can rediscover his goalscoring form. His time with club has been marred by inconsistency and although I don’t think he will re-discover his form for us, playing regularly on loan can only do him some good.

Friday was a great result, we stopped Chesterfield one of our rivals gaining on us in the League.

The negative knockers are at it again, look we are having a great season (Blyth apart). Praise the positive and leave Paul Simpson to sort out any negative issues.

If I was one of the Town players who put in a battling performance on Friday and then read the negative comments in the Shropshire Star artical, I would feel pretty deflated.

It is typical of this country we like to talk everything down. Thats partly the reason why we are in the financial trouble we are in.

Look praise the Town, don’t knock them. It was NOT disappointing on Friday.

Very disapointed to throw away two goals after a Glyn Garner howler.

The sooner Daniels is back the better!!.

On the positive side we looked very comfortable at 2-0 and showed how much we have improved over Simpson.

I agree that Jackson needs a rest but has been very solid until recently.

I am totally bemused on fans calling Garners mistake a howler or indeed blaming him - he was unsighted by Darren Currie and dived to his right, he managed to get a hand to the ball which made it look like a fumble but if everyones glass is half full instead of being half empty they would praise Garner for at least getting to the ball in the first place. People fail to mention the two excellent saves after that - one to his right diving low and palming the ball away and another for the cameras when he dived high and to his left. If fans are to blame Garner then they should blame the attack as prior to Currie’s goal Town should have been at least 0-5 up anyway! Id say the first hour we were better than we were against Wycombe!!!

Again we show no killer instinct 2-0 up then draw 2 pts down the toilet not what we need considering our history.
