Paul Twemlow, said Ronald and Freda, of Tern Hill, were “the best parents I could have had”.

The 52-year-old, of Victoria Road, Market Drayton, said he has been touched by the many messages of condolence.

He said: “A lot of people have already contacted me with messages of support, which have been very, very helpful.

“Dad was in the RAF during World War Two and he worked with a crashed aircraft recovery team. Mum ran a wool stall since I was five years old.”

The grandparents of Garden City, Tern Hill, were travelling along the A41 north of Newport in their Toyota Corolla when the crash happened at about 3.50pm on Thursday.

Mr Twemlow added that his 86-year-old father and 81-year-old mother had been married for more than 50 years and spent most of their lives in the area.

The couple were well known in Market Drayton where Mr Twemlow had been a joiner and his wife ran a wool stall on the market until about two years ago.

Andrew Davies, from Newport Market Trading Company, where Mrs Twemlow had another stall, said stallholders had been shocked and upset to hear of the couple’s deaths and said: “They were very well respected and liked. She was a very lovely lady and it was more of a hobby for her than a job.”

The tributes come as a councillor has called for urgent action to improve safety measures along the road, which he says has a “chequered history”.

Eric Carter, Telford & Wrekin Council member for Newport east, said he would be speaking to highways officers next week to see what could be done to reduce the danger of the A41.

He said: “I think it is time that the council looked at this part of the road to see if it is practical to make it a double white line section so people can’t overtake. I’m sure that would stop that sort of accident happening.”

Chris Ammonds, for Telford Police, urged witnesses to the smash to contact police on 03003 333000.
