Town get closer to Wembley

Shrewsbury Town FCTown move one step closer to Wembley in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, which follows another impressive home performance in the league.

Two more home games – eight goals scored, none conceded, why can’t we play at the Prostar every week?

The wins over Luton and Dagenham put Town right back into form after a few indifferent results in recent weeks. The players all seem to be hitting form at the same time and it’s great to see Holt scoring more consistently.

However, the victory over Dagenham last night was marred by the news that Davies will be out for a few weeks through hernia trouble. He has been our best player this season in my opinion and his captaincy, creativity and goals will be missed. But the good thing about the club this season is its strength and depth, and it will give a good opportunity to players like Humphreys and Leslie to stake a claim for a regular spot.

What we need now is another home draw in the semi-finals and that trip to Wembley will seem all that bit closer. After the performances we have been producing in the cup this season we have got to be one of the favourites and we should not fear anyone.

The game against Luton saw Town get back to winning way and winning comprehensively. In truth we could have won by a bigger margin, but I don’t think fans can have any complaints. They certainly have been entertained at the Prostar this season and long may it continue.

There were so many positives to take out of the game, considering my recent concerns about the team in the last few weeks – a clean sheet, Holt scoring from open play and Humphreys playing well after starting a game (although it would be nice to see him prove that he can perform for 90 minutes).

The next challenge for the team is to go on an unbeaten run for about ten games, so that we can try and distance ourselves from the other promotion-chasers. We are still only about three points from teams in mid-table which is not where we want to be.

The excitement of the FA Cup starts on Saturday as Town face a potentially tricky trip to Blyth Spartans. The cup has a long history of small teams upsetting the big boys, but the only headlines we want Town to be making are after we win by a record margin. What are the chances of two trips to Wembley this season?

In 8 League and FA Cup games away from home this season we have conceded on 7 occasions. You have to go back to 16 August to have seen The Shrews keep a clean sheet away in these 2 competitions. It’s all well and good to get results at home but abject performances like the one witnessed at Croft Park on Saturday are becoming all too frequent. For Mr S to state that Saturday’s cup exit was one of his lowest footballing points is to ignore the recent trend. We have no midfielder - perhaps with 1 exception - currently worthy of wearing the Shrews shirt. Was Mr S not at the Accrington or Morecambe away games. Those performances were as spineless as Saturday’s. If these players don’t like travelling then they shouldn’t be considered for the team. Shame on you midfield !
