Shrewsbury will soon be lit up with artwork to mark the bicentenary of the birth of the town’s most famous son.
Three local artists are looking for quirky venues in the town centre to show a variety of illuminated works as part of the celebrations commemorating the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth in February.
Shrewsbury’s retail group Shop in the Loop has been asked to help in finding locations for the “Lighting-up Time” project.
“We’re hoping Shop in the Loop will help us locate small windows – above and below usual eyelines – little architectural overhangs and spaces, corners of shop windows and so on,” said Sue Challis, who is working with Andy McKeown and Maggie Allmark on the installation.
Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council has donated £5,000 towards the project as part of its £500,000 Darwin bicentenary funds.
John Hall, of Shop in the Loop, said the group was behind the exhibition and hoped that as many retailers as possible would come forward with locations.
His shop Write here! is being used as a base from which to project an illuminated artwork onto the Unitarian Church, which is located opposite the shop and where Darwin worshipped as a child.
Businesses participating will be credited on the project’s purpose-built website and linked to other Darwin sites around the region, UK and world.
Any retailers who are interested should contact ms.challis@btopenworld.com or call (01743) 352423 or 07792 930010.

All this silly rubbish for a guy who was born here and spent the rest of his life elsewhere.
