MPs to grill financial trioThe men responsible for steering Britain through the international banking crisis of the past weeks will be grilled by MPs later today.

Chancellor Alistair Darling, Bank of England governor Mervyn King and Financial Services Authority chairman Lord Adair Turner appear before the Commons’ Treasury committee at 16:00 BST.

In an unusual step for select committees its chairman John McFall has been accepting questions from members of the public to ask the trio.

He said the move was justified given the public concern about the stability of the UK banking system and the millions spent by taxpayers on bailing them out.

“Taxpayers are naturally very concerned about the scale of this investment,” Mr McFall said.

“The committee hopes that by providing people with the chance to have us put their questions to those in charge, we can provide a constructive way of engaging the public on a matter of such deep concern to the whole country.”
