Time to repay the fans – Tierney

Thursday 23rd October 2008, 11:30AM BST

Full-back Marc Tierney has backed Shrewsbury Town’s “big characters to put things right for the fans” in Saturday’s top-of-the-table trip to Brentford.

Town head to the capital for the second-versus-fourth clash aiming to recover from the major disappointment of Tuesday’s 2-1 defeat at Accrington Stanley.

Last season’s player of the year, Tierney admits Shrewsbury’s travelling supporters are owed a victory after the midweek setback, and is confident it will come at Griffin Park.

“Collectively, we will all take the blame for Tuesday, stand up and hold our hands up and say we weren’t at the races,” said the 23-year-old left-back.

“But the main thing is we need to bounce back and put it right this Saturday.

“We have got big characters in the team and not one of us shies away from doing a bit of hard work so we will be back in and trying to put it right for the fans.

“It was a great showing from them at Accrington and to get beat was a bitter pill to swallow – but we will come back stronger.

“It’s back to the drawing board. We had a good win last Saturday and we don’t change overnight and become bad players.

“We will go back to training and put things right and all stand up and be counted come Brentford.

“It’s a big test down there but I think the lads will come through it.

“I’m dying to get back on to the pitch, put the record straight and get back to winning ways and all the other lads are as well.”

Tierney, who reported no injury problems after being withdrawn shortly before the hour mark on Tuesday, has also backed Town’s defence to bounce back from conceding two pool goals in the opening six minutes at the Fraser Eagle Stadium.

Meanwhile, Town supporters will tonight have the chance to quiz the club’s hierarchy at the latest fans forum.

Manager Paul Simpson, managing director Rob Bickerton and Jon Harris, general manager, will all be on the panel in the Sovereign Lounge at the Prostar Stadium from 8pm.
