Simpson’s Town vow

Paul SimpsonBoss Paul Simpson will prescribe a heavy dose of hard work to ensure free-scoring Shrewsbury keep their feet on the ground.

Town dumped Wycombe Wanderers out of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy on Tuseday evening with a stunning 7-0 victory at Adams Park – Grant Holt netting five of those.

That drubbing followed on from from a victory by the same scoreline over Gillingham in League Two at the Prostar Stadium just 24 days earlier.

And, to boost confidence levels further, they have also beaten much-fancied Bradford 2-0 in between those incredible spectacles.

The Shrewsbury chief will not allow his players to rest on their laurels though, and has pledged to make sure they are fully focused for the clash with Port Vale on Saturday.

“We’ll just keep working them extremely hard – they know that there won’t be any let up,” said Simpson.

“Tuesday has gone. We enjoyed the night but it’s all fish and chip paper now.

“Myself, John (McMahon) and Stuart (Delaney) will keep drilling it into them how important it is to make sure they keep doing things in the right way. Hopefully on Saturday that will show.”

Simpson is also hoping the fans continue to get behind them in ever-increasing numbers as the season starts to take shape.

Shrewsbury are averaging 5,768 at the Prostar Stadium so far, with a best of 6,517 for the Bradford victory two weeks ago.

That record is the fourth best in the division, and the Town chief is eager to see even more turn out for the clash with the Valiants.

“It really is a game to look forward to,” he declared. “They’ve got a new manager and they’ll be hoping it’s the start of a new era for them.

“We’re hoping to remain unbeaten at home and it would be nice if we could keep another clean sheet.

“Hopefully the supporters will back us in their numbers again.

“The support is getting stronger, so if we can get a few more in it will keep the chairman happy.”

I know that there is a lot of games left this season, but I admit that Town look more and more like a team that would get straight promoted.
The spirit and mentality are lightyears from last season, and with more experienced players and Simpson at the helm, I’m pretty sure that this would be our year.

Good to hear hard work is still needed even after a 7 - 0 win. Such things could only be dreamed of 12 months ago…………

Whilst we have improved there is a danger of us getting a bit carried away with the results. There is a long way to go and we need to take each match at a time.

The real test of this team is in the middle of winter on heavy pitches, poor weather, injuries
    and suspensions.

The first suspension kicks in Saturday will be interesting to see how we cope without Grant Holt.
