Folk great aids project

Maddy PriorFolk legend Maddy Prior is to visit Llanfyllin to show her support for The Workhouse project.

The former Steeleye Span singer will give a concert at the Llwyn Theatre in the town to raise funds to restore the old Workhouse building and turn it into an arts, education and community venue.

Recently the Victorian building’s own indoor venue was opened with theatre and cabaret events already proving a success.

Film nights and music evenings are also planned at the venue.

A spokeswoman for The Workhouse said organisers were delighted to have attracted Maddy to help launch the new venue, although her concert would be in the nearby Llwyn Theatre.

She added: “Some 40 years from her emergence on the late 60s folk club circuit, Maddy is one of the most enduring, influential and respected artists in British music.

“Outside of Steeleye Span, Maddy has built a solo career and she has also found herself performing alongside a range of medieval and unusual instruments while being inspired by the myths and legends of the British Isles.”

At the concert on Monday, which will start at 8pm, she will be accompanied by Benji Kirkpatrick and Giles Lewin, both members of the acclaimed English folk collective Bellowhead.
