Wembley target for Town boss

Manager Paul Simpson today outlined the case for Shrewsbury Town’s defence - and hailed the role they have played in an impressive start to the season.Boss Paul Simpson will tell Shrewsbury Town to “go for it” in their Johnstone’s Paint Trophy clash at League Two leaders Wycombe tonight (7pm).

The Town chief is planning to indulge in some tactical tinkering in order to unlock his side’s attacking potential on the road.

Shrewsbury have scored 14 goals in the process of winning their four League games at the Prostar Stadium so far, but have only managed five goals and one win away from home.

Now Simpson plans to use the second round Trophy clash at Adams Park this evening as a chance to try a slightly different approach.

“It isn’t the highest priority but it’s a really good opportunity for a club like ourselves to get to Wembley,” he declared.

“Wycombe are a good side. They’re tight defensively and they’ve kept six clean sheets so far this season, but we’ve kept five ourselves and we’ve scored goals.

“Away from home I don’t think we’ve done as well as in the home games and I want to look at different things tonight and see if we can really go for it.

“There won’t be wholesale changes to the side, it will be very close to the side that played on Saturday, but it may be that our set-up is very different.”

Centre-back Michael Jackson is the only major doubt from the squad that returned to Shropshire with a 1-1 draw at Darlington on Saturday.

The experienced centre-back had four stitches in an eye wound during that game, and required further treatment yesterday.

“We weren’t too happy with the way it was knitting together so Nathan (Ring, the club physio) took him back to hospital yesterday and had it re-stitched so it will be a neater scar,” added Simpson.

Winger Chris Humphrey missed the Darlington game after taking a knock on his ankle during the reserves’ 2-1 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest last Wednesday.

He returned to full training yesterday and is in the party heading for Buckinghamshire.

Whichever the competition a cup run really gels the fans together and I agree with the boss that a trip to Wembley cannot be underestimated. The boss is also planning to tinker with the formation to look at attacking options and this should be applauded. Lets hope the team win obviously, but if we do go out then lets look for and build on any positives. Good luck lads
