We must learn to play away game

Darlington v Shrewsbury TownDespite still sitting third in League Two, the 1-1 draw at Darlington means it is still only one win in five away games for the Town, writes Shrews blogger James Pugh.

Are fans concerned by this, considering how different our home form is, or can we rely solely on picking up wins at home to get us promoted?

I came away from Darlington feeling somewhat disappointed, which shows how far we have come.

I had hoped to see us be more positive, but again felt we had come for a point. I don’t expect us to play the same attacking, flowing football we show at home, but would like us to show more ambition.

Last season the MK Dons’ away record read W18, D3, L2 and that is the type of record I feel we will need if we want to challenge for the title.

Don’t get me wrong, a point against one of the pre-season favourites for promotion was a good point and yet again we showed our fighting spirit by getting back into the game with a wonder goal by Thornton.

But at times on Saturday I felt we were a bit narrow and didn’t have many option on the wings – which is why I feel our squad is lacking two quality wingers.

The defence was again outstanding and I thought Walker made a real difference when he came on. Holt and Walker are certainly our best strikers and if both can stay fit I think they will form a great partnership.

Although Holt hasn’t been getting many goals from open play, he has been performing well and has had a bit of bad luck in front of goal. I am sure the goals will soon come because his quality is there to see.

The situation with Madjo turning down the opportunity to go out on loan and get some first team matches under his belt is an interesting one.

Madjo has said he wants league football because he has aspirations of getting back into the Cameroon squad. I admire his ambition, but from what I have seen from him I can’t see he has the quality to play international football and should not be choosy about where he should be playing on loan.

Surely playing football and proving a point to Simpson is better than warming a seat in the stands.

Next Saturday sees the return of former crowd favourite Luke Rodgers with Port Vale and I have no doubts that he will get a good reception from Town fans, who recognise what his goals did for us while he was here.
