Boss Rob Smith bemoaned AFC Telford United’s third home 0-0 of the campaign - and admitted they were losing touch with Blue Square North leaders Southport.Workington became the latest team to leave the New Bucks Head with a point after Saturday’s stalemate.
The result actually saw Telford jump two places to sixth in the table, but they are now nine points behind the leaders from Lancashire.
“It’s hard to go in and slaughter the players after that - there’s no need because I thought we played some great stuff but we’re so frustrating in the last third,” said Smith.
“We knew Workington would be an organised side but if we’re going to be serious about being up there challenging, which a club like this has to be, then that’s not a good enough result.
“Three 0-0s at home is not good enough. We’re not clinical enough. The top teams will beat them and we haven’t.
“If we fall too far behind it will all be dead and buried and we’ve already got a lot of catching up to do just to get in the play-offs. At the moment, we’re losing touch with Southport too much at this stage.”
The Telford chief also paid tribute to the supporters, after recent complaints about excessive negativity.
“They were 100 per cent behind us on Saturday and it was superb support but, while I’m not asking for criticism, they’d have a right to complain about that,” he added.
“Maybe they recognised that we did give it a go. It’s difficult to single out any players who haven’t given their all, it’s just our decision-making isn’t up to scratch.”
Meanwhile, Smith has dismissed reports that defender Asa Charlton was on the verge of a move to Blue Square North rivals Redditch.
Charlton returned to the Bucks starting line-up on Saturday, playing at left-back, and Smith says comments attributed to Redditch boss Gary Whild on Friday were inaccurate.
