Early bath for smelly Pele in tank ordeal

Pele is back to his white and fluffy self.A dog named after a Brazilian footballing legend took his eye off the ball somewhat when he fell into a septic tank full of foul waste in his owner’s garden near Oswestry.

Pele, a four-month-old Bichon Frise puppy, paid the penalty when he tumbled into owner’s Ann Grimes’s septic tank at Clarks Lane, St Martins yesterday.

The pongy pup had to be scooped out in a large plastic bucket from the 8ft deep tank and then endure a shower and shampoo.

Owner Ann today said Pele was recovering after his smelly ordeal and was back to his white and fluffy self.

Ann said: “My electrician Simon Jones had taken the lid off the tank to have a look at it yesterday and didn’t notice Pele had followed him up to the bottom of the garden.

“Before Simon knew it Pele, who has always been a bit nosy, had jumped into the tank. All you could see was his eyes and nose. The smell was terrible and he started to get really frightened and cold.

“We tried for about 25 minutes to get him out ourselves but we couldn’t reach so in the end I was forced to phone the fire brigade.

“While they were on their way Simon and I managed to scoop Pele out of the tank with a fishing net and a large plastic bucket.

“He was certainly not smelling of roses and was feeling very sorry for himself.”

Ann added: “The fire service was fantastic. They were here so quickly and were really helpful.”
