Eighties pop icons Bananarama wowed guests as they performed a surprise gig at a private party in Shrewsbury.
The duo performed a 45-minute set for about 200 guests invited to a party at C:21 in Abbey Foregate on Saturday night.
But organiser James Hawkins said a lot of people who had been invited did not turn up because they thought it was a hoax and was not going ahead.
Mr Hawkins said Big Brother contestants from the latest Channel Four television series were cancelled because of a dispute with contractors.
Mr Hawkins, who organised the party - which featured a Spice Girls theme - said Bananarama and Hoop La La, from Britain’s Got Talent, were there and the event had been a big success.
Martin Monahan, owner of C:21, said Bananarama delighted guests on the night with a “fantastic” set.
He said: “They were hugely popular in the Quarry earlier this year. The whole crowd was electric.
“They did a fantastic set including all their main hits.”

where were the spice girls? i got a flyer on sat saying they were def there,
WAS THE BUS SOMETHING TO DO WITH IT? IT WAS PARKED IN CAR PARK ALL DAY EMPTY, MY LITTLE ONE THOUGHT THE SPICE GIRLS WERE GOING TO BE THERE TOO, WHO IS THIS GUY? IS HE FROM SHREWSBURY?
How the mighty have fallen back in the day Bananarama would never have attended this type of show.
I walked pasted C21 and it looked like a party just for boys!! Is this what we need to make Shrewsbury a city?!
food was great and c21 looked splendid, i got in and i didnt have ticket or knew the bloke, think they were short on people
I also was given a flyer saying that the spice girls were going to be at c21. I even rang up. The staff said it was a private party. Why hand out flyers then ? And how is it possible to legally put out flyers saying that the spice girls are going to be there when they weren’t? Not a great move for something which was supposed to help Shrewsbury with a achieving city status!
didnt realise c21 had private parties, who hired banarama, and is shrewsbury going to be a city, what connections has this man got to think he can do this??!!
The flyer never actually said the Spice girls were coming it was all an illusion, it said the greatest girl band with a picture of the spice girls on it so if people were naive enough to think that the spice girls would actually come to shrewsbury then its their own fault they were left disapointed and this was not a move to try n help shrewsbury gain city status it was a party organised and paid for by a by a Shrewsbury man who wanted to show his friends a good time.
I do not think Bananarama would make anywhere a city! What has he got planned next to make Shrewsbury a city…or is he a one hit wonder?? I also can’t believe that one minute Big Brother Stars are coming and the next minute they are not…
I was at the party - it wasn’t private anyone could get it!! 200 invited guests?! Not many rsvp’s is all i can say!!
there are 2 things to make shrewsbury a city, one is it’s unique history and the second is an open air performance by they wurzels. swanna know when they be in salop next? so do i
Didn’t C21 get Lisa Riley to open the place, hardly creating a classy image! Last time i was in there a group of chavs were beating their chests at the bar and the music was awful.
