Nominate YOUR Star Woman of the Year

Star Woman of the YearStar Woman of the Year is on target to be a day to remember, with the search for the county’s ultimate golden girl stepping up a gear now it has entered the final stages.

There is now less than a month to go until the deadline for entries.

The standard of those dedicated few put forward for the award has always been high in this competition and this year we want to ensure that it remains so.

We have already heard about some truly inspirational women who have shown their selfless dedication to helping others - stories which have pulled at the heartstrings of many for their ability to fight for the community in which they live and a more secure future for others.

Carla LowndesOne such woman is Carla Lowndes, who was a key figure in the fight to save a number of Shropshire village schools from closure earlier this year.

Carla, a parent governor at Buildwas Primary School, helped to galvanise the campaign and unite supporters of the 22 schools under threat to show the authorities how important the schools were to the structure of villages in the county.

The campaign enjoyed success when the education authority reconsidered plans to close some of the schools, although the fight still continues in other parts of the county.

Tales of real-life innovators and county champions who have broken the mould in their own particular fields have also come flooding in.

Izzy Warren-Smith is one such woman who has helped thousands of women across the UK after founding the WiRE organisation.

Women in Rural Enterprise was launched at Harper Adams when its founder identified a lack of support networks for women desperately trying to boost agricultural economies with new businesses.

Now we want to hear more inspirational stories about the women of Shropshire and Mid Wales. It could be someone who has done their bit for charity or who has displayed selfless courage in a battle over adversity.

But we do need help to find these women. They are unsung heroines who have perhaps never asked for recognition but do deserve it.

Now is your chance to ensure they are honoured for their achievements.

The Star Woman of the Year ceremony, when the eventual winner will be crowned, will be held at the Albrighton Hall Hotel, near Shrewsbury, on November 28.
