New coach at Newport

Experienced rugby coach Ian Bletcher has taken over at Newport. The former Coventry and Stourbridge man was in charge for Newport’s 24-20 victory at Kettering last weekend following Ginge Wills’ departure before the start of the season.

“This club has a fantastic amount of potential and a very firm base,” said Bletcher, who works for the RFU and also alongside the Portuguese national team.

“It’s just about adding some professionalism in preparation. The enthusiasm is there and they are a really good bunch of players - my aim is to bring the best out of them.

“I have been extremely impressed with the organisation off the field. Ginge has done a very good job and maybe a few new ideas may make the difference.

“It’s a very tough league but if we can stay injury free then we have as good a chance as anyone.”
