This week’s pictures from the past

Here’s a bit of a picture puzzle which our readers might just possibly be able to solve. This photo was e-mailed in by Megan Beddoes, of Churchstoke, who says: “It was given to me among others belonging to my family.

“I am doing some family research and I am fairly certain it has a connection with my family on my maternal side (the surnames of which are Hughes, Morris, Davies).

“I recognise the lady second from the right (sitting) from another family photo who may be my maternal grandmother, Sarah Jane Hughes. I wonder if anyone recognises other faces in this group and can date it.”

There is a sign in the background which may be a clue as to the location. “It is very blurred, but the top line says ‘L.R. Green’ and second from the bottom is ‘Painter’, and on the bottom line what looks like ‘& paper’ followed by about another six or seven letters.

“If it is my maternal family, their family names were Hughes and Davies and they lived in the Welshpool and Buttington areas. It is important to me because granny died young and there is very little information about the family.”

So can you help? As to the date, we can have a stab at that from the fashions - around 1920, say? And could it actually be a wedding group? Over to you . . .
