Business booming after castle revamp

Ludlow CastleBusiness is booming for Ludlow Castle thanks to a successful multi-million pound restoration project.

The castle has enjoyed one of the most successful years in its history because it is now able to rent rooms to visiting holidaymakers and people who are getting married.

The boom follows a major refurbishment programme in 2007 when Castle House was renovated.

The project saw the creation of self-catering accommodation, rooms for weddings and civil ceremonies, a large room for functions, a new tearoom and improved gift shop.

Castle custodian Helen Duce said: “The restoration was a great success. We’ve enjoyed a very successful year and the new self-catering apartments have proved very popular.

“The tearoom is a delightful new addition and the function room has also attracted plenty of people. We’ve hosted lots of weddings and people are making more inquiries all the time.”

Castle House was formerly eight residential flats that belonged to South Shropshire District Council but they were bought by castle owners, Powis Estates. The acquisition made it possible to carry out the multi-million transformation, with the flats now used as holiday lets.

Mrs Duce said the work had also provided additional benefits to the town, its businesses and its many events.

She said there was additional space available to support Ludlow’s festivals.

She said that the renovation had made the ground floor of Castle House accessible to all and the glass-covered courtyard to link Castle House to the main entrance had proved a hit.
