Delight as castle is saved by sale

A preservation trust has bought one of Shropshire most historic buildings - paving the way for a £1 million restoration.

The Hopton Castle Preservation Trust has bought the dilapidated Hopton Castle from a farming family that had owned the building and surrounding land for about 150 years. The trust paid an undisclosed sum.

Today Sula Rayska, an expert in restoring historic buildings, said: “We are delighted. It’s been a long haul but we’ve finally completed the purchase.

“Hopton Castle had been owned by a local farming family for many years. It’s very difficult for individuals to obtain grants for restoration projects, which is why the trust was formed.”

Locals launched their campaign to restore Hopton Castle ten years ago and Mrs Rayska, whose company is based in Shrewsbury, became involved five years ago.

Mrs Rayska said the restoration would begin in the spring.
