Council best for getting tax cash

Council tax collection rates in Powys are the best in Wales for the third year running, it has been revealed.

The county council collected £50.7 million out of a total debt of £51.3 million funding frontline services and improving the council’s cash-flow according to the Welsh Assembly Government.

Speaking at a meeting of the Montgomeryshire committee of the council yesterday, Councillor Gwilym Vaughan, board member responsible for finance said: “I am delighted that Powys has not only retained its position as the best collection authority in Wales for the third year running but maintained a collection rate of nearly 99 per cent of all tax due.

“Not only did we have the best collection rate in Wales and well above English average, we managed to reduce the amount of arrears owed to the council by nearly £370,000.”

The county council collected 98.8 per cent of the amount due in 2007-08.
