Veteran community campaigner Ute Sambrook and young sports star Kevin Parton are among the latest worthy people to be nominated for a prestigious “Telford Champion” award.
As part of Telford’s 40th birthday celebrations, the Shropshire Star has launched a search for people who have made an important contribution to the town to be given recognition. And a diverse range of nominations have already been received.
Ute Sambrook, who moved to Telford in 1970, has immersed herself in working for the community. In addition to serving as a councillor, she has worked for the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust, helped start the YTS workshop at the Maws Tileworks in Jackfield, and helped raise cash for many causes such as the Wrekin Chairs Appeal.
Her daughter Nikki said: “In 2010 she will have given 40 years of her life to the people of Telford in one way or another.”
Telford Tigers ice hockey star Kevin Parton has been nominated by Ellen Davis of Stirchley. She said: “He is top scorer for the Tigers, has also played for Great Britain, and trains the youngsters. He is a very caring young man, aged 19, who works hard in everything.”
Ute and Kevin join other nominees including the “founding father” of Telford, Lord Northfield, long-serving town crier Percy Simmonds, former Star Woman of the Year winner Pearl Maiden, judo star Gemma Howell, sculptor Gerry Foxall, business pioneer Mike Lowe, and David Wassell, who was involved in the landscaping of the new town.
Once the 40 Telford Champions have been selected, they will be invited to a champagne presentation night at Telford Shopping Centre on December 9, and given commemorative trophies.
Who do you think should be included on the list?
If you know someone who you feel has made a decisive contribution to Telford and its people, either publicly, or privately, we want to know.
They may be unsung heroes, teachers, community workers, entrepreneurs, public servants, business leaders, or people from the fields of sport, the arts and entertainment? They could be carers, youth workers, volunteers, or roving ambassadors for the town.
There are no rules - the choice is yours. Anyone who has left their own indelible mark on the town over the past 40 years is deserving of consideration.
The search is on… and we are still looking for your help.
