Plans to revamp a notorious tower block in Telford which was branded an “absolute eyesore, disgrace and embarrassment” have been given the go ahead.
The scheme for Manor Heights, a 12-storey tower block in Hadley, was approved at last night’s plans board meeting.
Developer Russell Harrison Plc can now go ahead with creating a 12-storey extension to the block and building eight new apartments on the same site.
It will result in a total of 68 apartments on the Haybridge Road plot, with 51 parking spaces.
Councillors welcomed the scheme to breathe new life into Manor Heights, which has been standing empty for a number of years, despite some concerns over the amount of parking spaces.
Councillor Malcolm Smith welcomed the refurbishment but predicted that problems with parking would arise.
Michael Barker, lead officer for planning at Telford & Wrekin Council, said he appreciated the concerns over parking. But he said to compromise any of the development could make the scheme not viable financially.
Councillor Adrian Meredith said: “The building is an absolute eyesore, disgrace and embarrassment to Telford”.
