Dozens of people living near the site of a proposed windfarm are due to demonstrate outside a meeting in north Shropshire tonight.

More than 50 people living near Lower Farm, Bearstone, near Market Drayton, will turn out at the meeting of North Shropshire District Council’s development control committee with banners and placards protesting against the seven giant wind turbines proposed for the site.

Protesters were also due to fly a blimp over the site at 110 metres, the proposed height of the wind turbines, while councillors visited the site this afternoon.

The plans, by energy giant Nuon Renewables, were recommended for approval in a report before the councillors who will discuss the proposals tonight.

Members of action group Veto On Rural Turbine Expansion will speak against the proposals.

Terry May, from Vortex, said two coaches had been arranged to bring people in from Woore and Norton-in-Hales, and between 50 and 100 people were expected to demonstrate outside the meeting, at the Grove School in Market Drayton at 6pm.

“We are hoping very much it’s turned down, because it would devalue the land, and we have been working very hard to get it turned down,” she said.

Al Hanagan, spokesman for Nuon said wind turbines contribute significantly to the energy demands of the UK, and the energy they produce is clean.
