Residents in darkness after power surge

Residents in Shifnal were left without electricity for more than 24 hours after a huge power surge hit their homes.

Power to the Admiral’s Estate went off at 8.50pm on Saturday.

Although it was restored yesterday evening, many people were left with broken or un-usable electrical items. It is the second time in eight weeks the estate has suffered a power cut.

Residents today said a woman in her 80s fell and broke her shoulder in the blackout and her husband suffered breathing difficulties trying to help her during the drama.

They were both taken to hospital for treatment.

At least one television exploded during the surge and had to be dumped, still smoking, on a lawn. A satellite dish also blew and a street light in Jellicoe Crescent caught fire.Sandra Owen said she was told power supplies were initially cut to 150 homes on the estate by energy supplier EON after the surge but then the fault was narrowed to just 60 properties. Mrs Owen, 52, said her central heating transformer blew during the incident and added: “I was the first person to move into this cul-de-sac and over the last seven years we have had an increasing number of power cuts, culminating in Saturday’s incident.

“I want to know what the long-term plan is for putting this right.”

A spokeswoman for Central Networks said: “Supplies went off at 8.57pm on Saturday affecting 136 customers. There was a fault with an underground cable which caused high voltage in properties in that area.

“The actual fault has been repaired, but we don’t turn supplies in individual homes back on until the equipment has been checked.”

our energy prices are going up and our tv’s are going up in smoke! I think that EON should replace any items that got damaged by there “underground cable fault”, its always an underground cable that causes it, never a bird flying into power lines. Oh wait, they put the blame on a squirrel once! EON SUCK
