Opening date as school is finished

The final touches are being put to a multi-million pound school set to open in Powys in the next fortnight.

Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant Primary School has been created as part of Powys County Council’s school modernisation programme.

The £3.9 million school, next to the village recreation ground, will be officially opened on September 8.

John Evans, council communications manager, said that the school will provide four classes, teaching up to 120 pupils and teaching and staff rooms.

The design includes play areas and a car park and has provision for early years playgroup use and for a community hall to be built in the future.

The school will also use renewable energy, with a small wind turbine and a solar panel on the roof, with plans also being considered for a wood-chip boiler.

Viola Evans, council chairman, said: “I went to have a look at it a few weeks ago - it’s an amazing building and the new facilities will ensure pupils have the best start possible for their education.”

The school modernisation programme is part of a full review of primary schools.

Six primary schools have already faced the review, with three, including those at Howey and Llangurig, set to close.

The futures of schools at Llanfihangel, Carno and Llanwddyn are yet to be decided.
